Electrical Upgrades

WHOLE-HOMEREWIRING

Replace Aging Wiring Before It Becomes a Problem.

Residential properties built across the Twin Cities before 1980 often depend on outdated wiring systems that simply cannot safely support modern electrical loads. We specializes in full home rewiring services—systematically replacing brittle knob-and-tube setups, degraded insulation, and ungrounded branch circuits with modern, code-compliant copper conductors.

At Loch Monster Electric, our team of licensed Minnesota electricians manage the entire infrastructure overhaul from start to finish, which includes securing municipal building permits, mapping optimal routing lines through walls to protect historic craftsmanship, and passing final municipal code inspections.

When Do You Need

A WHOLE-HOME REWIRING?

YOUR HOME HAS ACTIVE KNOB-AND-TUBE WIRING

Knob-and-tube wiring was the standard electrical distribution method from the late 1800s through the 1940s, but it lacks a critical structural ground conductor. Over decades, the protective cloth insulation wrapped around these lines becomes extremely brittle and flakes away when exposed to continuous circuit heat, leaving live copper conductors entirely bare inside your walls. Because of this severe hidden fire hazard, many major home insurance providers in Minnesota completely refuse to issue or renew policies on properties with active knob-and-tube infrastructure.

YOU HAVE ALUMINUM BRANCH-CIRCUIT WIRING

During the mid-1960s and early 1970s, many residential homes were built using aluminum branch-circuit wiring rather than copper because of raw material shortages. However, aluminum expands and contracts at a significantly higher rate than copper when exposed to daily electrical loads, a mechanical behavior known as thermal creeping. This constant shifting eventually loosens terminal screw connections at outlets and switches, creating high-resistance gaps that can spark, melt surrounding plastic junction boxes, and cause electrical fires.

YOU ARE PLANNING A MAJOR HOME RENOVATION

If you are already preparing a major kitchen remodel, a basement finish, or a structural addition, the absolute best time to address your electrical infrastructure is while the walls are open. When drywall is stripped back to the structural timber studs, the labor costs and routing challenges associated with a full home rewire drop significantly, making it an ideal opportunity to modernize your layout.

CLOTH INSULATION IS DEGRADED OR LACKS SYSTEM GROUNDING

Properties built between the 1940s and 1960s often utilize early-generation plastic or cloth-insulated wiring that lacks a separate green or bare copper grounding line. Without a dedicated grounding system to absorb stray voltage, power surges or internal appliance short circuits cannot trip your panel breakers and will instead travel directly through metal appliance casings, presenting a severe shock and electrocution hazard to your family.

Breakers that trip frequently, a fuse box instead of a breaker panel, a panel that is 25 to 30 years old, or a panel that cannot support the loads you need are all signs. If you are adding an EV charger, a hot tub, a home addition, or a major appliance, a panel that was fine yesterday may not be adequate for tomorrow.

We pull the permit, schedule the utility disconnect, swap out the existing panel for a properly sized modern one, reconnect all circuits, and coordinate the inspection. Most residential panel upgrades are completed in a day. You will be without power for a portion of that time, but we plan around it and let you know exactly what to expect.

Most older homes came with 100-amp service, which was adequate for the loads at the time. Today, with EV chargers, larger HVAC systems, home offices, and more, 200-amp is the standard for most homes. Larger homes or those with significant electrical demands may need 400-amp service. We run a load calculation and give you the right answer for your specific home.

It depends on what is in your walls. A new panel does nothing for knob-and-tube or aluminum wiring that is no longer safe or code-compliant. In some older homes in Minneapolis and St. Paul, the wiring itself is the issue, not the panel. We assess both and give you an honest answer about what actually needs to be replaced.

No. Plug-in surge protectors only protect what is plugged into them and offer limited protection. A whole-home surge protector installs at the panel and protects all circuits, including your HVAC, appliances, and anything hardwired into the home. For anything with a circuit board, whole-home protection is worth it.

Yes, and it makes the home easier to sell. Buyers and inspectors flag outdated panels, fuse boxes, and aluminum wiring immediately. A modern 200-amp panel with a clean breaker layout removes one of the most common items on a pre-sale electrical inspection list.
